Santillo: La Petite Mort

Description

The ultimate intimacy: Self-stimulation in front of the lensThe title means the little death, a euphemism for orgasm, but the women who exuberantly masturbate for Toronto photographer Will Santillo in this book are as lively a bunch as you ll ever meet. Santillo conceived the project eight years ago to include a thorough cross section of women: young to old, slim to thick, perfect beauties to those not considered beautiful until seen through his lens. The one constant would be that each would decide and direct how she masturbated to climax while he captured the moment. From previous projects with amateur subjects Santillo had come to believe that masturbation is a far more personal act than most sex play because it is conducted almost exclusively in private. He set out to reveal the diversity and creativity with which women approach self-stimulation, and to portray the beauty of ordinary women in the throes of orgasm a beauty far richer than the male oriented depictions seen in pornography. Santillo says he seeks to uncover the hidden face of his subjects, and indeed, it s the faces that best show the intensity of response in these artfully explicit photos.Framing these lush, sepia-toned pictures are Dian Hanson s interviews with 37 of Santillo s models. Their candid insights discuss overcoming inhibition, giving in to exhibitionism, and achieving orgasm in front of a stranger with a camera. For all who are curious about just what the woman next door or one s own wife gets up to in her private moments, La Petite Mort is a breath of life.Text in English, French, and German"

Joel Meyerowitz: Morandis Objects

Morandis Objects

Description

In Spring 2015, the photographer Joel Meyerowitz sat at the work table in Giorgio Morandi's Bologna home, in the exact spot where the painter had sat for over 40 years making his quiet, sublime still lifes. Here Meyerowitz looked at, touched, studied and connected with the more than 250 objects that Morandi painted. Using only the warm natural light in the room, he photographed Morandi's objects: vases, shells, pigment-filled bottles, silk flowers, tins, funnels, watering cans. In the photographs, each object sits on Morandi's table, which still bears the marks the painter drew to set the positions of his subjects. In the background is the same paper that Morandi left on the wall, now brittle and yellow with age. Meyerowitz's portraits of these dusty, aged objects are not only works of art themselves, but they offer insight into the humble subjects that Morandi transformed into his subtle and luminous paintings. Joel Meyerowitz (born 1938) is a street photographer and portrait and landscape photographer. The New York native began photographing in color in 1962 and was an early advocate of the use of color at a time when there was significant resistance to the idea of color photography as serious art. Many of his photographs are icons of modern photography, and he is considered one of the most influential modern photographers and representatives of the New Color Photography of the 1960s and '70s. His work has appeared in over 350 exhibitions around the world and is in the collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art, New York and many other museums worldwide.

But Eve's uncle wants her to play for the highest stakes by making a respectable match with a wealthy lord...and Eve has her own secret reason for following his plan. Although Julian began to play recklessly to seduce a clever young lady, now he wants much more from Eve, and no one will stop him from risking everything on one final game that might win him Eve's heart and soul forever. Every day the small wooden people called Wemmicks do the same thing: stick gold stars or grey dots on Morandis Objects free download pdf one another. In this children's tale, Eli the woodcarver helps Punchinello understand how special he is - no matter what other Wemmicks may think. It's a vital message for children everywhere: that they are all special in God's eyes. Ten Faces of Innovation: Strategies for Heightening Creativity

Description

Innovation is the lifeblood of every company - the fuel that keeps an organisation going in a tough marketplace. But by its very nature it's hard to plan for, quantify and coach. In The Ten Faces of Innovation Tom Kelley explains how to do it. Kelley, author of bestselling The Art of Innovation, reveals the strategies that his world-famous design firm IDEO uses to foster original thinking and overcome naysayers who stifle creativity. For Kelley, innovation is all about individuals and teams. He identifies ten key roles developed by IDEO that anyone can adopt in order to innovate in different situations. Ranging from 'the anthropologist' and 'the hurdler' to 'the experience architect' and 'the cross-pollinator', they are all illustrated with real corporate examples and will help you transform the way you work, and show those around you how to do the same. The result is a brilliant and applicable guide to fostering creativity and creating a culture of innovation in any workplace.

Universal Errors As he explores the manifold contexts for understanding experience - epistemological, religious, aesthetic, political, and historical - Jay engages an exceptionally broad range of European and American traditions and thinkers from the American pragmatists and British Marxist humanists to the Frankfurt School and the French poststructuralists, and he delves into the thought of individual philosophers as well, including Montaigne, Bacon, Locke, Hume and Kant, Oakeshott, Collingwood, and Ankersmit. Provocative, engaging, erudite, this key work will be an essential source for anyone who joins the ongoing debate about the material, linguistic, cultural, and theoretical meaning of 'experience' in modern cultures. This story has entranced readers of all ages since it was first published twenty-five years ago. The tale tells the story of a boy orphaned very young, who is adopted by his Cherokee grandmother and half-Cherokee grandfather in the Ten Faces of Innovation: Strategies for Heightening Creativity free download pdf Appalachian mountains of Tennessee during the Great Depression. 'Little Tree' as his grandparents call him is shown how to hunt and survive in the mountains, to respect nature in the Cherokee Way, taking only what is needed, leaving the rest for nature to run its course. Little Tree also learns the often callous ways of the white businessmen and tax collectors, and how Grandpa, in hilarious vignettes, scares them away from his illegal attempts to enter the cash economy. Grandma teaches Little Tree the joys of reading and education. But when Little Tree is taken away for schooling by whites, we learn of the cruelty meted out to Indian children in an attempt to assimilate them and of Little Tree's perception of the Anglo world and how it differs from the Cherokee Way.

Danielle Steel: Amazing Grace

Amazing Grace

Description

On a warm May night in San Francisco, the Ritz-Carlton ballroom shimmers as a glittering, celebrity-studded crowd gathers for a charity dinner dance. The evening is perfect until, just minutes before midnight, the room begins to sway . In the earthquake s aftermath, the lives of four strangers will converge. Sarah Sloane, the wife of a financial whiz, watches her perfect world fall to pieces . Grammy-winning singer Melanie Free comes to a turning point in her life and career . Photographer Everett Carson finds new purpose amid the carnage and Sister Maggie Kent, a nun who works with the homeless, searches through the rubble and knows that there is much to be done . As the city staggers back to life, a chain reaction of extraordinary events will touch each of the survivors . Sarah discovers a crime and a betrayal, then a strength she never knew she had. Volunteering at a refugee camp opens new worlds of possibility for Melanie. Everett will forge an unlikely relationship with Maggie, who helps him rebuild his shattered life and upends her own in the process. And as a year passes each discovers the unexpected gifts in a tragedy s wake and the amazing grace of new beginnings. Throughout these enthralling pages, Danielle Steel creates a stunning array of contrasts from the dazzle of a society benefit to the chaos of a makeshift hospital, from the pampered lives of rock stars to the quiet heroism of emergency volunteers. The Makers of Modern Dance in Germany: Rudolf Laban, Mary Wigman, Kurt Jooss

Description

This is the story of three passionate choreographers and their colleagues who created European modern dance in the 20th century despite the storms of war and oppression. It begins with Rudolph Laban, innovator and guiding force, and continues with the careers of his two most gifted and influential students, Mary Wigman and Kurt Jooss. Included are others who made significant contributions: Hanya Holm, Sigurd Leeder, Gret Palucca, Berthe Trumpy, Vera Skoronel, Yvonne Georgi and Harold Kreutzberg. The book weaves together the connections among these extraordinary artists, "The Makers of Modern Dance in Germany" contains interviews, personal recollections and translations from German publications.

Lockwood, the new tenant of Thrushcross Grange on the bleak Yorkshire moors, is forced to seek shelter one night at Wuthering Heights, the home of his landlord. There he discovers the history of the tempestuous events that took place years before: of the intense passion between the foundling Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, and her betrayal of him. As Heathcliff's bitterness and vengeance is visited upon the next generation, their innocent heirs must struggle to escape the legacy of the past. In this second edition of his work, Venuti: * clarifies and further develops key terms and arguments * responds to critical commentary on his argument * incorporates new case studies that include: an eighteenth century translation of a French novel by a working class woman; Richard Burton's controversial translation of the Arabian Nights; modernist poetry translation; translations of Dostoevsky by the bestselling Atomic: The First War of Physics and the Secret History of the Atom Bomb 1939-49 ebook pdf translators Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky; and translated crime fiction * updates data on the current state of translation, including publishing statistics and translators' rates. The Translator's Invisibility will be essential reading for students of translation studies at all levels. Lawrence Venuti is Professor of English at Temple University, Philadelphia. He is a translation theorist and historian as well as a translator and his recent publications include: The Scandals of Translation: Towards an Ethics of Difference and The Translation Studies Reader, both published by Routledge.

They track Thailand's economic changes through an economic boom, globalisation and the evolution of mass society. This edition sheds light on Thailand's Putting Assessment for Learning into Practice pdf recent political, social and economic developments, covering the coup of 2006, the violent street politics of May 2010, and the landmark election of 2011 and its aftermath. It shows how in Thailand today, the monarchy, the military, business and new mass movements are players in a complex conflict over the nature and future of the country's democracy.

Description

The infamous, Most Wanted Goosebumps characters are out on the loose and they're coming after you! Catch them all undead or alive! Kat is reluctant to visit her Uncle Vic Frankenstein because of all the rumors about him. People in the small town where he lives say he's a mad scientist like his great-grandfather, Victor Frankenstein, who created a monster that came alive and terrorized the town. But Kat is relieved to find that even though he lives in a dark, old castle-like mansion, Uncle Vic is a quiet, gentle man, a scientist interested in building robots with artificial intelligence. Also, Kat loves Poochie, Vic's small, adorable, fluffy white dog, funny and playful. But after an accident occurs in her uncle's lab, strange things begin to happen. Has Kat created a monster? Or is something else responsible for the horror that is unleashed?

But little goes as planned and soon they're pursued by both the authorities and by stories that make them out to be the most fearsome trio of bank robbers and murderers around. The truth, though, is far more complex than the legend. And the heaven they've imagined may in fact be worse than the hell they sought to escape. Michael Connelly: The Crossing

The Crossing

Description

Harry Bosch crosses the line to team up with Lincoln Lawyer Mickey Haller in the new thriller from #1New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly. Detective Harry Bosch has retired from the LAPD, but his half-brother, defense attorney Mickey Haller, needs his help. A woman has been brutally murdered in her bed and all evidence points to Haller's client, a former gang member turned family man. Though the murder rap seems ironclad, Mickey is sure it's a setup. Though it goes against all his instincts, Bosch reluctantly takes the case. The prosecution's file just has too many holes and he has to find out for himself: if Haller's client didn't do it, then who did? With the secret help of his former LAPD partner Lucy Soto, Harry starts digging. Soon his investigation leads him inside the police department, where he realizes that the killer he's been tracking has also been tracking him.

Programming Ruby 1.9 & 2.0: The Pragmatic Programmers' Guide

Description

Ruby is the fastest growing and most exciting dynamic language out there. If you need to get working programs delivered fast, you should add Ruby to your toolbox. This book is the only complete reference for both Ruby 1.9 and Ruby 2.0, the very latest version of Ruby. 2013 marks the 20th anniversary of the Ruby language. We're proud that throughout its history, we've continued to cover the latest version of Ruby. Would you like to go from first idea to working code much, much faster? Do you currently spend more time satisfying the compiler instead of your clients or end users? Are you frustrated with demanding languages that seem to get in your way, instead of getting the work done? Are you using Rails, and want to dig deeper into the underlying Ruby language? If so, then we've got a language and book for you! Ruby is a fully object-oriented language, much like the classic object-oriented language, Smalltalk. Like Smalltalk, it is dynamically typed (as opposed to Java or C++), but unlike Smalltalk, Ruby features the same conveniences found in modern scripting languages such as Perl and Python. The combination of the power of a pure object-oriented language with the convenience of a scripting language makes Ruby a favorite tool of intelligent, forward-thinking programmers. The Pickaxe contains four major sections: * An acclaimed tutorial on using Ruby. * The definitive reference to the language. * Complete documentation of all built-in classes, modules, and methods. * Complete descriptions of all 97 standard libraries. This is the reference manual for Ruby, including a description of all the standard library modules, a complete reference to all built-in classes and modules (including all the new and changed methods introduced by Ruby 1.9, 1.9.2, 1.9.3, and 2.0). It also includes all the new and changed syntax and semantics introduced since Ruby 1.8. Learn about the new parameter passing rules, local variable scoping in blocks, fibers, and the new block declaration syntax, among other exciting new features. About Ruby 2.0 Ruby 2.0 is a minor update to Ruby 1.9, unlike the more major updates from Ruby 1.8 to Ruby 1.9. The major language changes in Ruby 2.0 are the addition of keyword arguments and the change to use UTF-8 as the default source file encoding. There are a number of additions to the standard library, including: * @Enumerator::Lazy@, which adds support for lazy access to potentially infinite lists. * Refinements allow you to encapsulate changes to third-party classes, and scope their application to individual source files, preventing your changes from polluting the global application. You'll also find that Ruby 2 is faster, and has memory management improvements that make it more server-friendly. All told, there are over 110 sections of the book that have been flagged and cross-linked to indicate 2.0 content. What You Need * This book assumes you have a basic understanding of object-oriented programming. * In general, Ruby programmers tend to favor the the command line for running their code, and they tend to use text editors rather than IDEs.

Robert Dawson: The Public Library: A Photographic Essay

The Public Library: A Photographic Essay

Description

Many of us have vivid recollections of childhood visits to a public library: the unmistakable musty scent, the excitement of checking out a stack of newly discovered books. Today, libraries in America also function as de facto community centres. And yet, across the country, cities large and small are closing public libraries or curtailing their hours of operation. Over the last eighteen years, photographer Robert Dawson has crisscrossed America documenting hundreds of these endangered institutions. The Public Library presents a wide selection of Dawson's photographs- from the majestic reading room at the New York Public Library to Allensworth, California's one-room Tulare County Free Library built by former slaves. Accompanying Dawson's revealing photographs are essays, letters and poetry by some of America's most celebrated writers. A foreword by Bill Moyers and an afterword by Ann Patchett bookend this important survey.

"New York Times" bestselling author Marissa Meyer reveals the story behind her fascinating villain in "Fairest," an unforgettable tale about love and war, deceit and death. This extraordinary book The Public Library: A Photographic Essay download ebook pdf includes a special full-color image of Levana's castle and an excerpt from "Winter," the exciting conclusion to The Lunar Chronicles." Bernie Glassman founded Greyston Bakery in Yonkers, New York, in 1982 to employ those whom other companies deem unemployable--the homeless, ex-cons, recovering addicts, low-skill individuals--with the belief that investing in people, and not just products, does pay. He was right. Greyston has evolved into an $8 million-a-year business with clients all over New York City. It is the sole supplier of brownies to Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, and has even sold cakes to the White House.
